Editors Named at Gannett News Service and Detroit Free Press

McLEAN, VA. – Two veteran Gannett (NYSE: GCI) editors were named to new positions today.

Caesar Andrews was named executive editor of the Detroit Free Press. He was editor of Gannett News Service based in McLean, VA.

Mark Silverman will become editor of GNS, replacing Andrews. He was publisher and editor of The Detroit News.
“Caesar Andrews is not only one of the leaders of our profession, respected across the country for his service to journalism and journalists, he is a wonderful editor,” said Paul Anger, editor of the Detroit Free Press. “We’re elated to have him as executive editor of the Free Press.”

“Mark Silverman also brings a wealth of experience to the GNS job and a deep understanding of the needs of the newspapers around the company,” said Phil Currie, senior vice president/News in the Newspaper Division.

Andrews began his career as a staff writer at TODAY at Cocoa, FL in 1979. He held editing positions at a number of Gannett publications, including USA TODAY, FLORIDA TODAY and at Gannett’s suburban newspapers in White Plains, NY. He was named editor of Gannett News Service in 1997.

He is a past president of the Associated Press Managing Editors organization; is on the boards of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the National Press Foundation; and is a member of the Recognition Committee of the Council of Higher Education Accreditation.

Silverman joined Gannett in 1986 as senior managing editor at Gannett’s suburban newspapers in White Plains. He also has held top editing jobs with the corporate news department, the Rockford (IL) Register Star and The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky. In 1997, he moved to The Detroit News as publisher and editor.

He has received numerous Gannett awards including Gannett Editor of the Year in 1999 and 2001. Silverman also is chairman of the Foundation for American Communications.
