Gannett Announces Executive Appointments

McLEAN, VA- Two executive appointments in the Gannett (NYSE: GCI) Newspaper Division were announced today:

Ellen M. Leifeld has been named president and publisher of The Tennessean in Nashville and a vice president in the Interstate Group.

Tove M. Hicks-Klund will succeed Leifeld as president and publisher of The Post-Crescent in Appleton, WI, and as a group vice president in the Midwest Group. She previously was vice president/sales and marketing for the Gannett Wisconsin group of newspapers.

“Both Ellen and Tove have performed well in every assignment they’ve been given” said Gary L. Watson, president of the Newspaper Division. “Their records are strong indications they are prepared to move onward and upward.”

Leifeld began her Gannett career in the newsroom of the Fremont (NE) Tribune in 1974, where she worked for six years. She returned to the company in 1984 as an editor at the Lansing (MI) State Journal. She later served as executive editor of the Battle Creek (MI) Enquirer and managing editor of the Rochester (NY) Democrat and Chronicle.

In 1994, she was appointed president and publisher of the Ithaca (NY) Journal. Three years later, she returned to the Battle Creek newspaper as president and publisher and as a vice president in the Midwest Group. In 2002, she moved to Appleton and the Winnebago Group.

Leifeld succeeds Leslie Giallombardo, who resigned and announced plans to form her own business.

Hicks-Klund joined Gannett in 1995 after holding management positions at a Texas newspaper. Her first assignment was as retail advertising manager at the El Paso (TX) Times, where she later served as market development director. In 1998, she was named advertising director of the St. Cloud (MN) Times. In 2000, she assumed a similar position at the Green Bay (WI) Press-Gazette.

In 2003, she added responsibilities for advertising at all of the Winnebago Group newspapers. Most recently, she has been responsible for all advertising and marketing functions at Gannett’s Wisconsin properties.
