Gannett Board Elects New Director

McLEAN, VA – Duncan M. McFarland, retired Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Wellington Management Company, LLP, has been elected to the Board of Directors of Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI), the company announced today.

“Duncan is highly respected in the world of business and finance, so we are extremely pleased that he chose to join Gannett’s Board after his outstanding career at Wellington,” said Douglas H. McCorkindale, Gannett Chairman, President and CEO. “His character and his knowledge will be strong assets to Gannett.”

McFarland, 60, joined Wellington Management Company after graduating cum laude from Yale University with a B.A. in economics in 1965. During his career, he held positions with the firm including vice president, senior vice president and managing partner before becoming CEO in 1994. He retired as chairman and CEO at the end of June 2004. He is a trustee of the Financial Accounting Foundation.

With McFarland’s election, Gannett has nine directors. His term begins today.
