Gannett Releases November Statistical Report
McLEAN, VA – Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) reported today that total pro forma operating revenues for the eleventh period ended December 1, 2002 increased 4 percent, benefiting from strong television revenues and year-over-year gains in newspaper advertising.
Pro forma (assuming that all properties presently owned were owned in both periods) newspaper advertising revenues in November were up 3 percent compared with the same period in 2001 on a 2 percent increase in ROP volume and a 5 percent advance in preprint distribution.
Pro forma classified revenues increased 6 percent in the November period on a 7 percent increase in ad volume. Employment revenues increased 3 percent, the first increase since December 2000. Classified real estate revenues advanced 9 percent, and automotive increased 6 percent.
Pro forma local advertising revenues declined 1 percent on a 4 percent decrease in ad volume. Retail advertising was impacted by the later date of Thanksgiving this year. The important Thanksgiving holiday advertising week for our Phoenix, Indianapolis and other former Central newspapers falls in our December reporting period this year versus November last year. Also, for all the other U.S. locations there were two post-Thanksgiving Sundays in the November period last year versus one this year. For comparison purposes the company recommends combining November and December results.
Pro forma national advertising revenues rose 8 percent on a 6 percent increase in ad volume. National volume at the company’s local domestic newspapers rose 10 percent in the period compared with the same interval in 2001. At USA TODAY, advertising revenues were flat on a 13 percent decline in paid ad pages to 436 from 501. For the year-to-date, USA TODAY’s paid pages numbered 4,385 compared to 5,055 last year, while ad revenues were 8 percent lower.
Pro forma television revenues increased 13 percent in the eleventh period. National revenues rose 18 percent and local revenues grew 11 percent.
In addition to the revenue and statistical summary, attached is a chart which shows the consolidated Gannett Online audience shares for October from Nielsen//NetRatings. In October, Gannett’s domestic web sites had 14 million unique visitors reaching 11 percent of the internet audience.
