Gannett Elects Board Members, Declares Dividend

McLEAN, VA – Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE:GCI) elected three members to its Board of Directors today. At the company’s annual meeting, shareholders re-elected Meredith A. Brokaw and Donna Shalala each to a three-year term and the board of directors elected Solomon D. Trujillo to a one-year term, to fill a board vacancy.

Trujillo is the chairman, president and chief executive officer of Graviton, Inc., a developer of wireless sensory information networks. Prior to joining Graviton, Trujillo served in various top executive positions at US West, concluding his career there as the chairman and chief executive officer.

In announcing Trujillo’s election, Gannett Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Douglas H. McCorkindale said “Sol Trujillo, with his extensive business experience and his breadth of knowledge in the fast-paced technology and communications sectors, is a wonderful addition to Gannett’s Board.”

Trujillo received a BA degree in business, an MBA and an honorary doctorate from the University of Wyoming. He also serves on the boards of Comstellar Technologies, PepsiCo. Inc., Orange SA and Target Corporation.

Gannett directors serve for staggered terms, with approximately one-third of the board standing for election each year. Trujillo’s term begins today, and he joins the class of directors who will stand for re-election at the shareholders meeting in May 2003.

The board of directors also declared a regular quarterly dividend of 23 cents per share, payable on July 1, 2002 to shareholders of record on June 7, 2002.
