#TeachersCan-A-Thon Aims to Raise $1.5M for Texas Teachers
Teachers in Texas have had a challenging year. They’ve navigated in-person and online learning in the middle of a pandemic. On top of that, a 2020 study found that teachers, even in the era of distance learning, are spending $745 of their own money a year on supplies for their classrooms.
“Teachers are trying to fund classrooms and teaching environments that are completely new and they deserve our support,” says Byron Wilkinson, Director of Sales at KVUE. “We want to raise them up as much as we can.”
Enter the #TeachersCan-A-Thon.
To thank Texas teachers for their unwavering commitment to students, the movement known as #TeachersCan is partnering with non-profit DonorsChoose and TEGNA’s Texas stations to fund up to $1.5 million worth of classroom projects, fulfilling teacher wish lists submitted to KVUE.com/teachers.
Beginning on April 24th, individual donations to #TeachersCan will be matched by partners across the state, doubling the impact of contributions for a total of $1 million. With the telethon, TEGNA aims to raise an additional $500,000 to help fund teachers’ classroom projects.
“It is such a neat crowdfunding project, says Jim Carson, Senior Account Executive at KVUE, noting that donors will be able to see how their donations will be used, as you can select which classroom projects you want to support. “It makes it very real for the donor.”
To help get the word out and raise as much money as possible for the cause, KVUE won’t be the only TEGNA affiliate that promotes the #TeachersCan-A-Thon. “We’re going to build a ton of awareness and raise a lot of money for teachers because educating our kids is the most important thing we can do,” says Carson.
“TEGNA is enabling this huge movement to happen,” says Wendi Hinson, Senior Account Executive at KVUE. “I can’t donate $1.5 million to teachers, but as part of TEGNA, I can help make it happen, and I’ve got to be proud of that.”
