Gannett Broadcasting Stations Win Three Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards
McLEAN, VA – Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) today announced three of its broadcast stations have won Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards, which recognize excellence in broadcast, digital and documentary journalism. KPNX in Phoenix, AZ, WLTX in Columbia, SC, and WTSP in Tampa-St. Petersburg, FL, were among the four local television stations honored for outstanding local television investigative reporting. The awards are administered by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
“This is an outstanding accomplishment for our company and a testament to the dedication and hard work being done every day by our journalists across the country,” said Gracia Martore, Gannett president and CEO. “These investigative stories have uncovered corruption, dysfunctional systems and flaws in government and resulted in positive change for the communities we serve.”
KPNX won for its investigation of the Phoenix Fire Department’s arson squad. The story resulted in changes to fire department staff and practices. WLTX won for its investigation, “DSS: When the System Fails,” which examined the tragic death of a four year-old child and serious flaws at the South Carolina Department of Social Services. WTSP won for its investigation, “Short Yellows and the Red Light Fight.” The story exposed ways governments abused technology to generate millions of dollars in revenue from drivers.
